3rd Consortial Meeting during Open Campus Week
As a part of the Open-Campus-Week, the 3rd consortium meeting of the 5G.NAMICO project took place on September 19 in Aachen. It was a nice exchange about the progress of the two research areas: on the construction site and 5G in the minery. Within the 5G.NAMICO research project, 5G will be used in the construction and mining sectors of the future. Based on the results of previous projects such as the 5G-Industry Campus Europe, a 5G network will now be installed at the Reference Construction Site of RWTH Aachen University and in an underground mine to take advantage of the technology. The network has been successfully deployed in both areas. At that point, many thanks to Ericsson and Kabelwerk EUPEN AG for the great and excellent work and their effort. The 5G.NAMICO project is funded by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia through the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitalization and Energy and is technically managed by Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionstechnologie IPT. 🤝 The project is supported by the partners Chair for Individualized Production, RWTH Aachen University, Lehrstuhl für nachhaltige Rohstoffgewinnung MRE, RWTH Aachen University, Kabelwerk EUPEN AG, Ericsson, GHH Fahrzeuge GmbH, BAT Bergbau Service GmbH, BROKK, Liebherr Group, PORR Group and LEONHARD WEISS GmbH & Co. KG. The development and evaluation of the use case on the construction site is coordinated by CenterConstructionRobotics. 5G accelerates insights in construction research
The Center Construction Robotics has joined the 5G Industry Campus Europe and is testing the performance of 5G for the construction site. With the relocation from Campus West to Campus Melaten of RWTH Aachen University, the Center Construction Robotics now benefits from access to the 5G network from the 5G Industry Campus Europe and provides construction research with new questions and insights via the connection to 5G technology. "The 5G technology enables us to work on the most exciting research projects in the construction industry in Europe, here at the RWTH Aachen University campus. In collab-oration with our colleagues from the manufacturing industry, we will benefit from their knowledge gained in recent years at the 5G Industry Campus Europe and, for the first time, we will be able to gain cross-trade insights into the use of 5G on the construction site together with our industrial partners from the construction industry," says Sigrid Brell-Cokcan from the Chair of Individualized Production, who is the scientific director of the new projects at the Center Construction Robotics. The high transmission rates of 5G improve communication efficiency and enable real-time communication of machines and IoT devices due to lower latency, and provide a faster exchange for partners involved in construction to further explore digitalization and automation on the construction site. The first 5G project to be carried out on the reference site by Center Construction Robot-ics is the sovereign-funded 5G.NAMICO project. Last fall, the reference construction site – which is unique in Europe – moved from Campus West to Campus Melaten at RWTH Aachen University. The re-search team from industry and academia has now completed the installation of the an-tennas and fiber optic cables. The next step will be to install and test measuring equip-ment at the crane and other locations. Among other things, the performance of the 5G network will be tested here. The latency and bandwidth will be measured, as will the reli-ability and performance of the data transmission. The 5G.NAMICO (Networked, Adaptive Mining, and Construction) project is investigat-ing how the 5G mobile communications standard can be used in the construction and mining industries. While the industrial use of 5G has so far been limited mainly to indus-trial production, 5G.NAMICO will transfer the knowledge already gained to the construc-tion and mining industries. The project is funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitalization and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia (MWIDE) and led by the Fraunhofer IPT. The research project is being carried out by the university institutes MRE (Institute of Mineral Resources Engineering) and IP (Chair of Individualized Production) at RWTH Aachen University. The development and evaluation of the construction site use case are coordinated by the CCR. Project partners CCR, IP RWTH Aachen, Fraunhofer IPT, MRE RWTH, Nerospec Associated partners Kabelwerk Eupen AG, Ericsson GmbH, GHH Fahrzeuge GmbH, BAT Bergbau Service GmbH, BROKK DA GmbH, Liebherr-Werk Biberach GmbH, PORR AG and LEONHARD WEISS GmbH & Co. Construction Site 5G Infrastructure Meeting
Within the framework of the first work package a meeting was held on the Reference Construction Site to discuss and evaluate potential concepts for setting up the 5G infrastructure for the construction use case. The plan is to use the crane as the main transmitter mast for the 5G network. Project partners from Ericsson, Liebherr, IPT, IP, PORR and CCR gathered together to examine challenges and potential solutions.

Construction Site Usecase Meeting
The construction site usecase definition workshop was hosted online by the institutes IP RWTH, Fraunhoffer IPT and MRE RWTH. The problem statement and the challenges of the construction site were first detailed followed by the identification of opportunities for the 5G Network in controlled reconstruction processes. Both Individualised Production, RWTH and Construction Robotics GmbH presented their parts of the usecase. Based on the defined usecases, a preliminary data profile for the 5G network was suggested. The meeting wrapped up with the feedback from the partners about the design and setup of the above mentioned 5G network infrastructure.

Kickoff Meeting
The 5G NAMICO project successfully kicked off on 11th, February 2022. The meeting was hosted online by the institutes IP RWTH, Fraunhoffer IPT and MRE RWTH. The project partners met and introduced themselves to each other. The objectives and work packages were then presented to everyone present. Following this, usecase workshops were conducted to collect valuable opinion about various aspects/challenges of the project.
